MGL Group’s social value team recently supported STEM Partnership Day at Yarm School, helping to deliver an engaging day for primary school pupils from across the Tees Valley.
Run in partnership with the Northeast STEM Foundation, the event introduced pupils to science, technology, engineering and maths in a hands-on way, with a focus on showing how these subjects connect to real-world careers. The aim was to give young people an early insight into the opportunities STEM can offer and to make these subjects feel accessible and enjoyable.
Greg Chapman and Sara Beveridge from MGL Group joined a range of local and national employers to lead interactive sessions throughout the day. As part of this, they also gave pupils a brief introduction to MGL Group, explaining the work the business does and how STEM skills are used across its projects. These sessions gave pupils the chance to explore different industries, ask questions and see how STEM skills are applied in practice.
The team’s workshop proved to be a real success, with pupils getting involved in a series of practical activities designed to encourage teamwork and problem-solving. One of the most popular parts of the session was the bridge-building challenge, where groups worked together to design and build their own structures. It was a simple but effective way to introduce basic engineering principles while encouraging creativity, communication and collaboration.
There was a real sense of energy in the room, with pupils fully engaged and keen to take part. It was great to see how quickly they picked up new ideas and supported each other as they worked through the challenges.
Events like STEM Partnership Day highlight the value of bringing education and industry together. By working in partnership, organisations such as MGL Group and the Northeast STEM Foundation can help inspire future generations and give young people a clearer understanding of the opportunities available to them.
