MGL Demolition has entered the high-reach demolition phase at Spencerbeck House, a former residential tower block in Ormesby, Middlesbrough, marking a significant milestone in the redevelopment of the North East site.
The 26m-high building, which has stood vacant since 2023, is being carefully dismantled using a high-reach excavator. Following a review of the demolition methodology, high-reach demolition was selected as the safest and most efficient solution for removing the structure, enabling works to be completed in a controlled and progressive manner.
Demolition is being carried out using a planned sequence, with the high-reach excavator beginning at roof level before working through the building in defined sections. The structure is being removed on a bay-by-bay basis, allowing the team to maintain control of the demolition process while ensuring the highest standards of safety are maintained throughout.
Prior to structural demolition commencing, extensive enabling works were completed to prepare the building for safe removal. These activities included the soft strip of internal fixtures and fittings, asbestos remediation, roof works and the removal of redundant materials. Completing these stages in advance has helped maximise recycling opportunities and support the safe progression of the project.
As a certified demolition contractor, safety remains at the forefront of operations. A range of measures have been implemented on-site, including exclusion zones, dust suppression controls and continuous monitoring to minimise disruption to neighbouring residents and businesses while protecting the workforce and surrounding environment.
The project is being delivered on behalf of Beyond Housing, with close collaboration between all stakeholders helping to ensure the works progress safely, responsibly and efficiently.
Spencerbeck House has been a familiar landmark within the local area for decades, and its demolition marks the beginning of a new chapter for the site. Once the structure has been safely removed and the site cleared, Beyond Housing intends to repurpose the land for community use, with local residents set to play a key role in shaping future proposals through consultation.
The project highlights MGL Demolition’s expertise in delivering complex high-rise demolition works, combining detailed planning, specialist equipment and rigorous safety controls to safely transform redundant structures and prepare sites for future regeneration.
