Steel Export Terminal (SET) Modifications

The Steel Export Terminal (SET) at Teesport was constructed in the early 1970s by the British Steel Corporation to facilitate the export of finished steel products. Upon procurement of the site, the client looked to modify the SET to create a covered bulk storage facility.

Operating as Principal Contractor, Rainton Construction undertook modification works, completing this civil engineering project with support from MGL Demolition.

We undertook demolition and site clearance enabling works including the removal 6 large overhead cranes including crane rails and all access equipment. The work was undertaken in a live marine environment as port rail operations and loading out of shipped materials were not suspended.

Rainton Construction works included:

• Sub-surface drainage works
• Concrete perimeter retaining walls
• Pedestrian and large aperture doorways
• Design and installation of cladding and purling system to elevations and roof
• Foundations and structural steelwork
• Renewal of concrete floor
• Environment Agency liaison for water discharge consents

We integrated our specialist supply chain partner to remove paint and pigeon guano from existing steel structures using high-pressure water jetting with robust environmental mitigations. This provided a cashable efficiency to our client of approximately £2m.

We worked in partnership with the client and our team of experts to produce designs for concrete panel walls, piling, drainage, and roof/wall cladding systems. Our collaborative approach during design ensured the client understood the products and specifications being used and allowed opportunity to make changes in order to meet their project objectives.
