Portland House and Milford House
MGL Demolition was employed by our client to undertake asbestos removal, full demolition and site clearance of Portland and Milford House, two 10-storey blocks of flats in Middlesbrough.
Segregation of the various works played a major part in the sequencing and overall programming of our works, with the whole project having an overall 28-week programme.
Following the removal of notifiable and non-notifiable asbestos containing materials (ACMs), a full soft strip was undertaken to each floor with the existing lift shafts being used as an internal chute to get materials safely out of the buildings. This coincided with the external removal of the rock wool insulation and render to the external faces of the tower blocks, using an external MEWP for access.
Following soft strip and then removal of asbestos bitumin adhesive to each floor, the buildings were then demolished using our high reach excavator down to ground level. Smaller machines were brought to site on completion of the demolition works, to process the arisings and remove surplus material off-site.
Due to the location of the works being on the main intersection within Middlesbrough and in close proximity to residential housing and live traffic, we put in place robust procedures for monitoring and mitigating the impact of noise, dust and vibration, as well as a logistics and traffic management plan for traffic movements on and off-site due to the large volumes of material to be removed.
