MGL Demolition was appointed to undertake this complex, high risk and intense deadline driven asbestos removal project in the centre of Newcastle.
Our initial works package was to remove notifiable asbestos containing vitreous enamel (VE) panels from the Central Metro Station in Newcastle. This was initially a 5-day project, however it became apparent there was a bigger volume of asbestos to remove and our package of works grew with additional works being added. The most significant was the encapsulation of the wet shield tunnel lining.
One of the main challenges was that the works were required to be done ‘out of hours’ as part of the major refurbishment of the Metro Station. Working hours were between 8pm and 5am, Sunday through to Thursday to accommodate this.
All works within a shift had to be completed on time and all plant and materials were removed. This ensured sufficient time for Nexus to power down and on completion power up the overhead power lines so trains and passengers were able to use the station from 5.30am each morning.
MGL Demolition’s Asbestos Removal Operatives successfully completed additional training specific to working within rail infrastructure.
All works had to be undertaken using specially sourced platforms designed for use on railway lines.
Asbestos removed had to be transported through the tunnel system to a rail siding at Forth Banks where a skip was able to be located, with licenced disposal thereafter.
