Project Overview
In partnership with Durham County Council, Rainton Construction successfully trialled Hazigrip anti-skid asphalt on the A167 in Ferryhill, Durham. This innovative material, manufactured by Tynedale Roadstone, enhances road safety by providing superior skid resistance and clear visual differentiation of junctions and skid-prone areas.

Safety and Sustainability
This project focused on improving road safety and emphasised sustainability. Hazigrip’s high Polished Stone Value (PSV) and improved grip reduce the risk of accidents, especially in high-risk areas. The red-coloured asphalt alerts road users to junctions and skid-prone areas.

By using locally produced materials, the project significantly reduced its carbon footprint. This approach aligns with the broader goal of promoting sustainability in construction and reducing the need for imported aggregates.

Summary
The trial showcased how innovative materials can contribute to safer and more environmentally friendly infrastructure. The material will be used on future schemes in County Durham as part of the Surfacing and Planing Framework.
