We are thrilled to announce that MGL Group has once again won the prestigious Innovation category at the Constructing Excellence North East (CENE) Awards. This recognition, for the second year in a row, is a testament to our innovative solution to quantified problems.
The Innovation award highlights how we’re pushing boundaries, developing new technologies and smarter solutions that move our industry forward and boost efficiency. The judges recognised the results of our most recent innovations, which have promoted our circular economy, reduced organisational carbon intensity, and diverted waste from landfills.
We were recognised for multiple examples of innovations and developments, and deliverables from previous innovations reaching key milestones. A key factor for the success was the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Soil Wash Plant at our Newburn facility. This is the first all-electric design in the region capable of transforming 160 tonnes of waste per hour into recycled aggregates, establishing a new benchmark for material circularity and environmental performance.
The integration of Plastipave®, warm mix technology and Net Zero Asphalt, creating a fully circular, data-led materials system at commercial scale, was recognised as one of our most successful innovations. This included delivering 8,181 tonnes of asphalt across 72 schemes within County Durham. Plastipave® diverted waste plastics from landfill, while warm-mix technology reduced production-stage emissions by enabling lower-temperature manufacturing, cutting fuel use and CO₂ emissions without compromising performance.
Part of our submission highlighted our implementation of SulNOxEco™ fuel conditioning which has delivered a verified 5.74% fuel-efficiency improvement, reducing CO₂e emissions by over 208.5 tCO₂e annually, while our asphalt operations deliver mixes that, on average, emit 15% less than ICE 4.1 benchmarks.
We had a fantastic evening at the Grand Hotel Gosforth Park in Newcastle, celebrating our industry alongside more than 500 members of the North East built environment. A big thank you to the CENE team for organising such a great event, and to our incredible team for their continued hard work and dedication.
We are proud to be recognised as a successful innovator within the construction industry in the North East for a second year in a row. We look forward to further deliveries of successful innovation.
