Rainton Construction is Delivering Vital Culvert Repair Works 300m Underground

Rainton Construction is delivering specialist concrete repair works to the Ouseburn Culvert, helping to preserve a vital piece of infrastructure located beneath Newcastle city centre. Following inspections that identified significant structural deterioration, this project is focused on extending the lifespan of the structure and ensuring its long-term integrity.

While culvert repairs projects can often be straightforward, the Ouseburn Culvert presents a unique set of technical and logistical challenges. Constructed in the early 20th century, the structure has suffered from decades of wear, exposure to moisture and the gradual deterioration of reinforced concrete.

One of the most significant challenges has been accessing and working within a confined-space environment with little to no natural light. The culvert’s restricted working conditions require specialist access arrangements and rigorous safety procedures.

Throughout the concrete culvert repair project, the unique underground environment has required enhanced safety arrangements. We have worked closely with Mines Rescue, who have provided dedicated emergency rescue cover throughout the works, ensuring immediate support was available if required. The lack of natural light within the culvert also necessitated a continuous supply of temporary lighting from the surface to maintain safe working conditions and operator visibility.

The technical nature of the repairs has also required a tailored engineering approach. The project addresses the underlying causes of deterioration rather than just repairing visible defects. Works include reinforced concrete repair, treating and protecting corroded reinforcement, infrastructure repairs and resealing structural joints. Additional corrosion protection measures were also put in place to help protect the culvert against future deterioration. Given the critical nature of the structure, the on-site team implemented rigorous quality assurance procedures to ensure all repair works met the client’s requirements and delivered a long-term solution.
