Overview
MGL Demolition demolished the Quarry House Lane footbridge spanning the A167 near Neville’s Cross, Durham. This essential infrastructure upgrade was undertaken after the steel bridge was deemed beyond economic repair.
Scope of Works
The project involved dismantling the pedestrian bridge structure, the south ramp, and all adjoining walls. Following demolition, reinstatement works restored verges, footways, and boundary walls.
Challenges
To minimise disruption to one of Durham’s principal traffic routes, all primary demolition work was carried out during a series of consecutive night shifts. Working to tight timescales was critical, as the A167 between Neville’s Cross crossroads and the A691/Southfield Way roundabout was closed overnight (20:00–06:00) to allow demolition and immediate diversions to be implemented.
The proximity to residential properties required meticulous planning and strict environmental controls, with noise, dust, and vibration mitigation prioritised throughout.
Sustainability
Sustainability was central to the project approach. Materials from the demolition were carefully reclaimed and reused wherever possible, reducing waste and supporting environmental objectives. To ensure the new structures blended seamlessly with existing features, reclaimed stone from the demolition was used for wall reinstatement.
Summary
The demolition of the Quarry House Lane footbridge was completed safely, on programme, and within budget.
