Heighington Village
We undertook the replacement of existing failed footways to a residential area. The footways were a mixture of traditional surfacing, micro-asphalt and modular pavements, all which were broken and potholed, causing danger to pedestrians. Additionally, all the properties had driveway crossings over the footway to reduce on-street parking due to the narrow estate roads.
The footways required closure to carry out any reconstruction works but this needed to be kept to a minimum and avoid prolonged restricted access to private drives. For this reason, the Council chose our innovative material, Plastipave Fast, for the project. It is a footway material that replaces the requirement for traditional two course construction and allows completion of surfacing in one layer.
The existing pavements were excavated to remove all failed surfacing and then regulated with granular sub-base material to allow for a single layer of surfacing at 60mm deep. This is equivalent to a standard 40mm binder and 20mm surface course construction. Plastipave Fast has a 10mm nominal size aggregate and incorporates an additive to provide a fast set property which also raises the initial softening point of the surfacing allowing it to be open to traffic earlier.
Benefits:
- Construction time savings of due to the single layer construction while allowing increased output by the surfacing team.
- Reduced traffic management requirements with early access to property owners
