Newcastle Airport Car Park Extension
Overview
As part of Newcastle International Airport’s challenge to meet rising passenger demand according to their newly published Masterplan 2040, Rainton Construction was appointed to deliver a major extension to the Airport’s long-stay car park. The expansion north of the existing facility added just under 1,800 new bays, significantly boosting capacity and enhancing the passenger experience. Our team ensured the highest standards of civil engineering and surfacing, supporting the Airport’s growth strategy ahead of anticipated demand.
Scope of Works
The scope of works included bulk excavation and earthworks, incorporating cut-and-fill operations and full site preparation. A swale was formed along one side of the car park perimeter with headwalls, and two attenuation tanks were installed (3,000 m³ and a smaller tank of approximately 100 m³). Electrical and security infrastructure was delivered with over 5,000 metres of ducting for power, CCTV, and data, plus a comprehensive lighting scheme. The extension was completed with our durable asphalt surfacing and clear road markings.
Challenges
The project presented several challenges, including the need for nesting bird and badger surveys 48 hours prior to site clearance works commencing. Procurement lead times for key components such as attenuation tanks and lighting columns required careful management, and robust risk assessments were implemented to safeguard third parties and maintain secure site boundaries. All works were aligned with the Airport’s requirements to ensure that they did not disrupt airport operations or compromise passenger safety.
Sustainability & Social Value
Sustainability and social value were central to the project. Plastipave® Porous, a permeable asphalt design, was incorporated to allow rainwater to percolate through the surface into the lower strata, reducing surface water and flood risk. This innovative material is manufactured in-house by Tynedale Roadstone using end-of-life plastic waste streams, contributing to a circular economy by diverting plastic and rubber from landfill and lowering carbon emissions with every batch. We also prioritised local suppliers to support regional economic growth.
Summary
This extension significantly increases long-term parking capacity and reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure that meets client needs and strengthens regional connectivity.
“The collaboration and communication from Rainton Construction have been excellent. Your proactive approach helped us overcome challenges and keep the programme on track.”
