Marine Central Yard and Machine Shop
MGL Demolition was appointed to undertake full refurbishment works at a nuclear facility in Barrow-in-Furness. All work was undertaken in line with extensive security protocols.
Work undertaken within C10, a live operational building included:
- Installation of 200 linear metres of 16m high industrial screen to enclose the demolition working area.
- Notifiable licenced and non-notifiable removal of asbestos containing materials (ACMs).
- Soft strip and removal of M&E redundant equipment using multiple techniques including cold cutting and hot works.
- Temporary works.
- Remote demolition inside the building using a 20 tonne excavator, pulveriser and grab attachment.
- Coordinating and overseeing the removal of 4 overhead cranes. Due to access restraints one of the cranes was piecemealed free standing within the air (14m high) with a crash matt created below with 6F2 material.
Central Yard buildings C24 and C25 works included:
- 16 buildings, full remote demolition and removal of ACMs.
- Notifiable licenced and non-notifiable removal of ACMs with use of access and designed scaffold.
- Temporary works.
- Extensive and complex building separations with the use of cranes.
- Soft strip and M&E removal using multiple techniques including cold cutting and hot cutting.
- Full time use of 7-8 specialised demolition excavators ranging from 14 tonne to 90 tonne with 34m high reach.
- Removal of 9 overhead cranes and one 120 tonne overhead crane using a 300 tonne crane to remove.
- 26 week client programme achieved within 22 weeks.
