MGL Group has donated £8,000 to Barton Church of England Primary School, providing the vital funding needed to install a brand-new outdoor trim trail. This generous contribution gave a major boost to the school’s fundraising efforts and has already transformed opportunities for play, physical activity, and creative learning for pupils.
The donation reflects the company’s strong connection to the area. Its asphalt production company, Tynedale Roadstone, is located just a mile from the school and plays a key role in the local infrastructure and employment market.
To mark the occasion, representatives from MGL Group, including Head of Research & Product Development Dave Whitehouse, visited the school with their newest apprentice, Ryan Wool. Ryan is a former pupil of the school, and his sister is currently enrolled there. The visit was a proud moment for both him and the company, underscoring the organisation’s commitment to nurturing local talent and giving back to the community.
Fundraising for the trim trail was led by the Friends of Barton School, a dedicated team of five parents and staff members who organised a range of events, including discos, bingo nights, car boot sales, and a Christmas fair. Additional support was provided by the Barton School House Trust (£2,000) and the Rowland & Eggleston Trust (£250), helping them bring the children’s vision to life.
The new trim trail, now installed on the school field, was chosen in consultation with the School Council to ensure it reflects the children’s ideas. It complements existing features, such as vegetable planters and a mud kitchen, creating an imaginative and comprehensive outdoor play space.
Gillian Reader, Director at MGL Group, said: “We’re delighted to support Barton Church of England Primary School and help bring the children’s vision for their outdoor area to life. As a business rooted in the local community, we’re proud to contribute to projects that promote wellbeing, creativity, and active play. Supporting local schools and offering apprenticeships to young people like Ryan, is central to our values.”
Mrs Kirstie Petch, Executive Headteacher, added: “The children are thrilled with the new play equipment. Play is such an important part of school life for so many reasons. We can’t thank MGL Group enough for their generous donation, which has truly made a difference.”
Mrs Alexandra Rankin, Chair of Friends of Barton School, said: “Fundraising in a small school like ours, with just 37 pupils, is always a challenge. We were introduced to MGL Group through a pupil’s grandfather, and the partnership has been fantastic. Their team has been incredibly supportive, helping us bring the children’s ideas to life. We’re grateful for their generosity and commitment to our school community. It’s been a pleasure working with them.”
The trim trail was installed by Creative Play Ltd and features exciting new additions, including a wooden wigwam in the nature area and posts for tarpaulins or zip lines, ensuring that pupils can enjoy years of outdoor fun, thanks to the power of community collaboration.
